Can I get a home charger in a rented property?
30 August 2021
As more people in the UK look to buy electric vehicles, one of the biggest questions is how and where can I charge my EV?
The Government is keen for people to make the switch to EVs and there are a range of incentives in place. These are applicable whether you own your home or are renting.
Home charging tends to be cheaper than using public chargepoints. It is also more convenient.
What do I need to know if I am renting?
The Government’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme grant is available to tenants as well as homeowners.
However, there are a number of things to consider, if you are looking to have a home charger installed in a rental property.
Firstly, you will need permission from your landlord or landlady. Research suggests that a home charger installation can enhance a property’s value, so in some cases, the owner of the home might even want to help with the cost. Even if you move home and take the chargers with you the cabling remaining cabling can be used used again to accommodate another EV charger, saving money longer term.
In addition to permission from your Landlord, to qualify for the OZEV grant, you must also have your own off street parking space.
Sufficient power supply
Another key consideration is the electric supply to your rented home, particularly if you are sharing a property or apartment block.
You must have your own electricity meter and power supply and it is important to ensure that your fuse rating is sufficient to accommodate your normal electricity usage and the EV charger.
You should also consider the layout of your property and how easy it will be to connect cabling from your power supply to the chargepoint – and the location of the chargepoint in conjunction with your parking space.
