UK electric car sales march ahead
11 June 2021
If evidence was needed of the growing momentum of the electric vehicle market in the UK, then March 2021 rubberstamped it.
Sales of electric and hybrid cars reached a record 13.9% of the overall market, an increase on the 7.3% achieved a year before.
The preliminary data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), revealed that 22,000 electric cars and 17,000 plug-in hybrids were sold in March 2021.
Car showrooms have re-opened
The growth in EV sales are all the more impressive, as it occurred a time when car showrooms were closed due to Covid-19.
Whilst click and collect sales have kept the car sales industry ticking over, there is no substitute for being able to view or test drive something tangible and SMMT were optimistic that the re-opening of showrooms in England, on April 12th, 2021, is providing the catalyst for an increase in overall car sale volumes.
Further EV growth almost inevitable
The international focus on lower carbon emissions is a driving force to more electric vehicles on our roads. A number of countries are set to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
In the UK, the government has indicated that all new vehicles sold from 2030 onwards must be hybrid or fully electric, with the sale of new hybrids, which combine a traditional engine with a battery, set to be banned from 2035.
SMMT states that the UK automotive market now contains more than 150 models of battery electric, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell and hybrid electric vehicles, equating to roughly one in three vehicles offering zero-emission capability.
A raft of new electric vehicles already have or are set to be launched during 2021. Auto Car has compiled a helpful list of new electric vehicles and anticipated launch dates, underlining the industry’s commitment to this growing sector.
